The Science Behind Class IV Lasers

Class IV Lasers emit electromagnetic light (near-infrared light waves).
When we utilize these light waves for healing, the process is called photobiomodulation.

How It Works

  • Once the laser light touches the nail, photons (particles of light) penetrate through and “attack” the fungal colony and bacteria without damaging healthy tissue.

When our body’s cells absorb the light, studies have shown accelerated cell growth, and increased neutrophils (white blood cells that fights infections.) These white blood cells create a crucial line of defense against dermatophytes that cause fungal infections.

  • Once laser light touches the skin, photons (light particles) penetrate underlying tissue and our cells absorb the light’s energy. This results in an increased production of a molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

ATP is responsible for “carrying” energy in order for other cells to perform their necessary functions. It is, basically, the fuel source for all other cells. When ATP production is increased, studies have shown accelerated cell growth, tissue repair and nerve regeneration – vital criterion for expedited healing and pain relief.

Conditions Treated with Remy Laser

Advanced surgical techniques that prioritize your comfort, recovery, and long-term foot health.

  • Onychomycosis (toenail fungus) affects millions of people and while many find it to just be “ugly,” it can lead to other complications including:

    • spreading to other toes

    • ongoing pain

    • increased chances of developing an ingrown nail

    Common symptoms include:

    • discoloration (often yellow)

    • very thick or very brittle nails

    • loosening or separation from the nail bed

    • foul odor

Toenail fungus is highly contagious and may spread through:

    • shared bathroom spaces

    • locker rooms, showers and swimming pools

    • shared shoes or clothing

    • carpeting or barefoot contact areas

Individuals with diabetes are more susceptible to fungal infections due to compromised immune systems and weakened blood flow.

  • The Remy Class IV Laser can treat pain and/or inflammation associated with:

    • Achilles Tendonitis

    • Adult Acquired Flatfoot

    • Ankle Sprains

    • Arthritis

    • Bone Spurs

    • Bunions

    • Gout

    • Plantar Fasciitis

    • Post-Operative Swelling / Discomfort

    • Metatarsalgia

    • Neuromas

    • Neuropathy

Benefits of Class IV Laser Therapy

Class IV Laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive, drug-free modality that has been scientifically documented to significantly reduce, and often completely eliminate pain.

The main goal of laser therapy is to stimulate cells to perform their natural functions, but at a rate that expedites healing by up to 300 times faster than normal.

    Beta-Endorphin Release

Laser therapy stimulates beta-endorphins – the body’s natural painkiller and stress reliever. These block the nervous system’s ability to send pain signals to the brain.

    Anti-Inflammation

Laser therapy activates the body’s natural lymphatic drainage system, which helps remove excess fluid that causes swelling (edema). Heat, redness, discomfort and pain are often associated with swelling.

    Enhanced Blood Flow

Photobiomodulation leads to the formation of capillaries in the vascular system, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach damaged tissue faster. This accelerates healing and reduces painful scar tissue.

What You Can Expect

  • How long does it take to see improvement?
On average, patients won’t see new healthy nail growth for 4–6 months from the initial treatment. Toenails grow about 1 millimeter per month, three times slower than fingernails.

Can I get a pedicure during treatment?
Pedicures at nail salons may sabotage treatment due to poor sterilization of tools and cuticle removal. We recommend a medical pedicure in our office. If nails are polished for a special event, remove the polish as soon as possible.

    Am I contagious during treatment?
Yes. Fungus can spread through shared spaces such as bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, pools, shared shoes, clothing, or carpeting.

  • What does the laser feel like?
Patients experience a warm, soothing feeling during treatment and are able to relax during the procedure.

    How long are treatments?
Treatment time depends on the size of the affected area and severity of pain, but most sessions are no more than 10 minutes.

    How many treatments are needed?
Typically no less than six treatment sessions are recommended for long-term results.

How does it compare to other treatments?
Unlike topical analgesics, cortisone injections, opioids, or painkillers, laser therapy works at the cellular level, allowing the body to heal itself rather than temporarily masking pain.
