What is a Bunion?

A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It develops when the bones in the foot become misaligned, causing the big toe to shift toward the other toes.

Common symptoms include:

A visible bump on the outer side of the foot

Pain, redness, and swelling around the big toe joint

Difficulty wearing shoes due to pressure and discomfort

Restricted movement in the big toe

Left untreated, bunions worsen over time — leading to increased pain and difficulty walking. Dr. Zhang is now trained to offer the Bunionplasty® 360 Bunion Repair™ procedure as a modern, less traumatic alternative to traditional bunion surgery.

What is Bunionplasty®?

An advanced minimally invasive bunion correction surgery that realigns the bones while preserving soft tissue — for less pain, less scarring, and a faster return to your life.

    Same-Day Walking

Most patients walk with a protective surgical sandal the same day — no casts, no crutches required.

    Realigns & Regenerates

The 360 Bunion Repair™ system realigns bone and promotes natural tissue regeneration for lasting results.

    Minimally Invasive

Tiny incisions reduce trauma to surrounding tissue, minimizing pain, swelling, and visible scarring.

How the Procedure Works

Bunionplasty® is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Most patients are home the same day.

  • Tiny, precise incisions are made to access the bunion — instead of one large cut — minimizing disruption to surrounding tissue.

  • The misaligned bone is carefully repositioned using specialized techniques to restore proper foot structure.

  • Small, low-profile screws from the 360 Bunion Repair™ system hold the bones securely in their corrected position.

  • Incisions are closed with minimal sutures — resulting in minimal scarring and a more natural-looking foot.

  • At Dr. Zhang's discretion, most patients leave the same day walking in a protective surgical sandal. No casts. No crutches.

What to Expect After Surgery

Bunionplasty® offers a significantly shorter recovery compared to traditional bunion surgery — so you can get back to doing what you love.

Potential Risks & Complications

Bunionplasty® is considered safe and effective. As with any surgery, patients should understand the potential risks and discuss them with Dr. Zhang during your consultation.

  • Some swelling and discomfort is expected in the days following surgery. This is typically manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication and reduces significantly within the first two weeks.

  • Some patients experience temporary numbness or reduced range of motion in the toe or foot. This typically resolves as healing progresses over the weeks and months after the procedure.

  • While Bunionplasty® has a significantly lower recurrence rate compared to traditional surgery, there is a small risk that a bunion may return over time — particularly without proper footwear and foot care. Dr. Zhang will advise you on long-term prevention strategies.

  • As with any surgical procedure, there are general risks including infection, bleeding, and reactions to anesthesia. Dr. Zhang will review your full medical history during consultation to minimize these risks.
